M2M REPORT BY Richard Oliver
M2M report:
After an overnight deluge outside Melbourne it was a wet start to the inaugural Marysville to Melbourne adventure race. Just over 100 individual participants and over 600 team members were ready for a characteristically changeable Melbourne autumn day. My goal as an individual participant, after no specific training, was just to finish which was not a definite by any means.
The first leg was billed as 19km run but ended up being 20.5km through the fire trails to Dom Dom saddle, mud was the order of the day. A change of clothes later we switched to road bikes for a 90km leg down Black Spur, through Healesville, up the back-side (oo-er) of Kinglake then down to Eltham. I saw three guys in the same ditch after hitting some oil going down Black Spur, they were lucky for it not to happen on a worse corner. My wheel fish-tailed on the same spot but I got away with it, my luck must have been in!
The weather cleared for the second 15km run leg along the Yarra. This was quite pleasant although by now I was at the back of the field, doing a good job of pacing and enjoying the scenery rather than racing for a time. It was all about nutrition and staying ‘loose’ I told myself.
My worries were focused on the paddle leg coming up. After only stepping into a boat the week before and getting a raised eyebrow from the paddle clinic coach, I knew I had my work cut out. Much the same happened when I joined Tri Alliance three years ago and got the same eyebrow from Ollie when I told him I would start with a half ironman! You know how we at Tri alliance practice and train everything? This was not following that mantra!
I managed to stay afloat for the first 15km, then needed help to carry my craft 500m around Dights Falls to the second and final 16km leg (help was legal at that point!) General fatigue took over, but surprisingly no specific paddle related issues which I was really chuffed about.
Finishing coming through the city at dusk on the water was a real highlight, and I had managed not to fall off in the final 16km! Famous last words, as I got dunked 3 times in the last 100m as I tried to negotiate their complicated berthing procedure, a wet 200m waddle to the line and mission was accomplished. A great season finisher but not to be taken lightly, it would be great to have some Tri Alliance teams there next year and any nutty individuals who are inspired.
Stats: 12:41:30, 18th out of 18 in the Male 40-49 ‘veteran’ category. 252/262 overall. I am sure somebody from the club can beat that next year!
