WORD FROM THE COACHES
Race 3 of the Gatorade/Active Feet Tri Series has been run and won and another great day with 58 Short Course athletes racing and PB’s galore from Race 2. CLICK HERE to read our Race Report and Wrap up from the race.
Last Saturday we also had a great number of athletes compete in the worlds largest and most popular open water swim – the Lorne Pier to Pub. Well done to the following athletes who enjoyed a great day in Lorne.

Last Thursday we had the Team from Mizuno and Running Fit join us for our Combo session again and it is great to have Mark, Simon, Trent and Ashley share in their passion for training and share their knowledge in running and running shoes with our team.
And with great looking, functional and fantastic priced shoes – why wouldn’t you want to get your feet in a pair of Mizunos!
FAREWELLS
We are sad to see two female athletes leave us for sunnier states over the next week.
Alison Faulkner is one dedicated athlete who makes the travel from Woodend area to MSAC on a regular basis to attend 5.45am swim sessions! After a stint in Canada last year Alison is now moving herself to Sunny Queensland Gold Coast and will look at joining out team up there. Alison has promised she will be back and we may even see her at the last Gatorade Race at StKilda. 🙂
Meg Takiguchi is leavnig us next week to relocate to the west to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. Meg will be finishing her studing in Perth and we’re hoping she’ll come back to Mlbourne when she’s done. Either way, best of luck to you Meg we’ll miss you. 🙂
ATHLETE TEAM MEETING & SMIDDY CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

Our Smiling for Smiddy Campaign Launch was a great success on Tuesday Night as part of our Athlete Team Meeting. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the night we raised $680 on the night to go towards our National Goal of $100,000! And a number of athletes took home some great prizes as a result – including Sharon Hinrichsen who won herself a race entry. Looks like you will be doing your first triathlon before the season is out Sharon! 🙂

SATURDAY COMBO SESSIONS – ARE BACK!
Our Saturday Combo sessions are being revamped, restructured and revitalised! Our new look session will start this Saturday 7.00am-9.00am. All short Course athletes are highly encouraged to attend with sessions including race speed runs, transition training, aquathons, duathlons, race simulations, open water swimming plus more!
What: Saturday Run + Combo session
When: 6.50am for 7.00am starts
Who: Intermediate Short Course athletes training for Gatorades, Sandy or Geelong Olympic Distance..
ATTENTION SHORT COURSE ATHLETES
BRIGHTON AUSTRALIA DAY SWIM
Saturday Training for the Australia Day Weekend will incorporate the Middle Brighton Australia Day swim.
Sprint Athletes are encouraged to enter the 1.4k or 650m swim and Olympic Distance Athletes are strongly encouraged to enter the 1.4k swim in the lead up to Sandringham & Geelong OD events.
We will have the TA tent at the event and coach Emma will be conducting a run/warm up session prior to the swim start. Further details will be communicated next week. But make sure you enter so you don’t miss out! CLICK HERE for more details and to enter
FIRST AID COURSE – St John’s Ambulance Australia
No matter what you do, it pays to have first aid skills because you can’t learn it in an emergency!
A number of the Tri Alliance coaches will be attending an Apply First Aid course with CPR on Friday 1st of February 2013. If you are interested in becoming accredited or need to renew your accreditation to apply First Aid then consider joining us.
Details
Course Date/time: Friday February 2013 8.30am – 4.15pm
Course Cost: $195 or $175 if we book in a min of 10ppl
Course details: Apply First Aid (valid 3yrs) and CPR (valid 12months). Course covers a broad range of topics to enable participants to confidently manage emergency situations, providing care for the ill or injured until medical aid arrives. 1 day course with pre work required.

ADVANCED SHORT COURSE ATHLETES
As we continue to deliver the best coaching and service to our athletes we are now structuring specific advanced short sessions. These sessions will be for athletes on our advanced short course program only (and will be communicated to directly). What this means is Saturdays there will be an advanced short course ride and Sunday’s advanced short course run. This allows these athletes to take their training to the next level, as long with grouping athletes of similar abilities/levels to train together – including our beginner/intermediate athletes. Athletes on our Advanced Short Course Program has been communicated to, but if you feel we have missed you out please contact Sarah to discuss further

Final reminder about our new program and fee structure as part of our last change to our structure. For athletes this affects, make sure you view these changes on line. IRONMAN MELBOURNE – SEARCHING FOR VOLUNTEERS!
After the huge success of our ‘Aid Stations’ at Ironman Melbourne last year, we are again putting a call out for athletes, friends, family who would like to volunteer some of their time to help man a Tri Alliance Aid Station on the Run Course of Ironman Melbourne. With around 50-60 Tri Alliance athletes competing in Ironman Melbourne, it’s going to be a huge event again for Tri Alliance and so we are looking for your support!
What we need!
Around 80 athletes/friends/family who can spare 2-4 hours on Sunday 24 March (Ironman Melbourne Race Day) to assist on one of two aid stations, handing out drinks and food and generally providing support to athletes as they run past.
We are also in search of two people who would be willing to help us with the organisation of the volunteers. You don’t need any experience – just some good organisation skills! Email sarah@dev.tri-alliance.com.au if you would like to volunteer OR be an Volunteer Organiser! Thanks, Sarah

Meet at Cafe Racer. 6.15am for a caffeine hit, 6.30am roll out.

Intermediate Short Course Combo Session:
6.45am for a 7.00am start, Elwood Lifesaving Club
Ensure you bring all swim, bike, run gear. Bikes and gear will be left at the transition area. Key focus will be race specific – so ensure you are ready for a solid (but fun!) session. Not one to be missed! 🙂

Beginner Short Course Session:
9.15 for a 9.30am start, Elwood Lifesaving Club
Ensure you bring all swim, bike, run gear. Session will include learning the basics of triathlon transition and skills and open water swimming.

Long Course:
- All Half IM Athletes and First Time Ironman athletes
6.00am for a 6.15am start Elwood Beach, meet near ELSC. Follow your program for distances, and full details will be provided at briefing. Ride will head towards Port Melbourne first.
Half IM – 120-130km (Mount Martha) with run off the bike (follow program for distances)
IM Melb – 150-160km with TT pacing efforts (Safety Beach)

- INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED Half and Full Ironman athletes (only)

6.00am for a 6.15am start. Oaklands Junction, Bulla. (Airport viewing carpark)
Click here for the Ironman Map Route, 150-160km. Note Stronger/advanced riders will include ‘The Cross’ at the top of Mount Macedon, while intermediate riders continue through to Riddels Creek for drink/food stop (100km)
Coaches Ollie & Sarah - Please note that riders on this ride MUST know the route, have sufficient nutrition, fluids, money, phone and spares. Athletes of this level should be self sufficient and depending on the riders attending, will split into smaller groups to ensure all riders have a continual ride with minimal stops as possible.
- Please ensure you allow sufficient time to travel to Bulla (back of Melbourne Airport) to ensure the ride leaves at 6.15am SHARP.
- Bring post ride recovery food/fluids with you also. A small esky comes in handy out here, and there is NO toilet so bring toilet paper if you think if may be an issue before we ride.
PORTSEA SWIM CLASSIC
For those doing the Portsea Swim Classic we recommend one of the following if you are planning on riding to/from the swim.
IM Melb: Meet at or around Mordialloc, ride to the swim (75km), complete swim and then ride home. Total 150km
Geelong LC: Meet at or around StKilda/Port Melbourne, ride to the swim (100-110km) plus run off the bike 5-8km. Then hitch a ride home.

Intermediate & Beginner Short Course RIDE + run off bike
6.50am for a 7.00am start. Meet at North Point Cafe, Brighton. Plenty of free off street parking.
