1. WORD FROM THE COACHES

RECOVERY WEEK

After two build and big weeks of training and the ramp up of our strength endurance phase recovery week is just that. The was no coached run session Tuesday morning and also there will be be no coached hot-laps tomorrow morning. Take this time to sleep in and let your body recover from a massive two weeks. Speaking with many athletes they have definitely felt it and had some of their biggest weeks in terms of sessions and volume.

It has been great to see the progress athletes have been making through winter with many first timers out in the Dandenongs on the weekend - well done in the hills! Those who have improved the most have shown consistency, commitment and accountability to themselves, their training and their training buddies. This will be rewarded with performance improvements come race season. 

Also encouraging is athlete communication to coaches on how they are going, feeling and tracking with various injuries or just their on-going training. It is vital that you do this from time to time to see you are on track or maybe just validate your thinking. Your coaches are there for you whether it's a quick email or sit down chat.

 

RUN TIME TRIALS TOMORROW

The only bit of intensity this week is our first bench-marking of run progress through the winter. We have held off until now to give a longer base and technique phase with the aim to build stronger and more efficient running bodies.

Time trials will be over 5k or 10k depending on your run goals this season and where you current run base is. The Tan run switches to MSAC and will meet in the main foyer ready to go at 6:15pm. Greg will also be running his session at Essendon at 6:30pm.

 

TRAINING UPDATES

As it is recovery week Saturday morning rides will be back on the flatness of Beach Road and rolling from Elwood at 7am grouped accordingly to goals and ability. Check your program or chat with your coach if you are unsure of your ride.

QUEENSCLIFF PRE SEASON TRAINING CAMP

The third camp on our training calendar for the 2017/2018 season is our Preseason Triathlon Training Camp in Queenscliff.

Get race ready with a spike in training in Spring over three days in September (Fri 8th/Sat 9th/Sun 10th), the perfect launchpad into the new racing season.

Located along the stunning Bellarine Peninsular and situated on the waters of the heads, Queenscliff boasts terrific terrain for cycling, picturesque trails along the coast and swimming in a beach that offers a variety of surf and flat waters.

This is a whole team camp, so all levels are encouraged to attend to gain a final training spike before jumping into our preseason preparation phase.

Camp numbers are limited – so make sure you reserve your spot to avoid missing out!

SPORTS SCIENCE SNIPPET #5

Sleep is a vital component of any exercise plan. However, it is often the least planned, and thus the least utilised. Current Australian guidelines recommend 7-9 hours sleep per night for majority of adults. For adults that exercise regularly, this number often increases. So, how many hours do you get?

VOLUNTEERS WANTED
There are many factors that influence the amount of salt lost in sweat during exercise. We will be conducting a study to see how the amount of salt you eat in the days before exercise might influence the amount of salt lost in sweat during the exercise session.
 
We are looking for male and female amateur and elite level endurance athletes (Runners, Cyclists & Triathletes) aged 20-45 who race and train and have completed at least one marathon or 100km cycling event (race, gran fondo or similar) previously.


You will be required to attend Monash University, Department of Nutrition & Dietetics-Be Active Sleep & Eat (BASE) Facility in Notting Hill, Melbourne (near Clayton):

Time commitment:
Males - on four half days (three mornings and one morning or afternoon).
Females – on two half days (one morning and one morning or afternoon).

As part of the study you will receive:

- Individual results from a VO2max test using the latest breath-by-breath system, including the % carbs Vs fat used during exercise
- Body composition using Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (recently validated against DEXA in endurance athletes).
- Assessment of the amount of salt in your normal diet
- Measures of your sweat rate and sweat sodium losses

These services are valued at around $350 to get done privately
