IRONMAN CAIRNS - ASIA PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017
We couldn't be prouder of all the Tri Alliance athletes who took on the challenge of Cairns on Sunday in both the 70.3 and IM races. Our crew worked their butts off in Melbourne with big goals in mind, all of them nailed their races, achieved amazing results, personal bests and some Kona spots. Let's get around our 7 superstars and give them the recognition they deserve.
IRONMAN RESULTS:
Michelle Leason ?9:50:55 ?New female course record holder ?1st Female Age Grouper ?1st place 25-29 ?1st time Ironman ?KONA qualifier Michelle came in to this race with one goal in mind - to get her spot to Kona. And that's exactly what she did! A dominant race with a strong performance in all three legs, it's amazing to think this was only her first time at this distance. We're so excited to watch her grow and know there's so much more to come.
Michelle Bond ?10:26:38 ?2nd place 35 - 39 ?Fastest run time in AG ?IM PB time ?5 x Ironman ?KONA qualifier Bondy has worked hard for this dream for the past 3 years and now it's her time to shine! In the last 12 months, the final pieces have fallen into place and she's achieved some amazing results. After a slow start, Bondy nailed her bike splits to get back into the top 10 and then ran the absolute house down to finish with her fastest marathon time and 2nd place. The hard work, consistency and determination paid off - time to enjoy Kona!
Brett Archbold ?9:26:07 ?7th place 35 - 39 ?2 x IM races in 2 weeks ?15 x Ironman ?KONA qualifier Archie is a seasoned athlete and has been chasing that Kona spot for the last couple of races. What's even more impressive, is that after bad mechanical luck at IM Brazil 2 weeks ago, pushing through to finish the race, he backed it up with a solid performance on Sunday. We were so excited to see him roll the dice, put it all together on the day and pick up that spot for the big dance in Hawaii for the 3rd time.
Mal Kemp ?10:21:38 ?9th place 25 - 29 ?3 x Ironman ? IM PB time A stellar race by this young man saw him sneak a 9th place. Getting the job done was the only thing on his radar, and with consistent training around a busy schedule and a grin on his face, he had his best build for an IM to date. And, a lazy 35min Ironman PB time!
James Tyler ?11:05:18 ?58th place 40 - 44 ?5 x Ironman ?1hr 20 PB on Cairns course Massive performance by Jimmy to have a cracking race and finish over 1 hour and 20 minutes faster than last year!!! A personally rewarding swim, solid bike and a run getting closer to what he's capable of, this guy is just keeps ticking boxes. Jimmy has been dialling in on the finer details of his IM plan and nutrition and this race is a massive leap in his journey.
70.3 RESULTS:
Ian Flegg ?4:41:12 ?5th place 45 - 49 A kick-start to his Kona campaign, Fleggo went into this race with a small build, but a specific purpose. He tested the waters after some time off and surprised himself with a 5th place finish. Now the real work begins as he works towards the big one in October!
Simon Gronow ?6:26:56 ?95th place 40 - 45 ?5 x 70.3 finisher A very rewarding race for Simon, coming back from injury, long rehab and patience and perseverance to compete his 5th half Ironman this weekend. It was great to see him battle though stomach issues on the run to finish out the day well and then stay out on course to support to the Ironman crew to the end.
LORNE CAMP
#lornecamp2017 was dubbed one of the best ever - check out the full review below.
"As I'm sure there a few people out there recovering from hangovers over the long weekend, I'm recovering from 3 1/2 days of intense triathlon training with the amazing coaches and athletes at Tri-Alliance. Such a great experience cycling a total of 210km along the Great Ocean Road, focusing on running technique and jumping in the chilly ocean for some open water swimming drills, body surfing and swimming" Rachel
THURSDAY'S TAN RUN
We will be meeting this week at the normal location - the water fountain at the main start at the Tan ready to run at 6:15pm. Please pass this on and remind your fellow athletes if arriving or meeting together. See you there for another great session.
TEAM MEETING - THURSDAY JUNE 22nd
Next Thursday in recovery week and in place of the Tan and Essendon run sessions we will be having our first team meeting of the 2017/18 season. This is a perfect opportunity to continue with the momentum we have in the squad by sharing some new and exciting things we have in the pipeline alongside checking in on the training phases and hearing from our Kona bound Cairns athletes. We also are going to have an interview/question and answer session with some athletes/coaches from short and long course to give all an insight into where they have come from, what makes them tick and what it took to get to where they are now. The meeting will be from 6:15pm at the Elwood Sailing Club and will have a short run session prior for those who can get there early.
TRAINING UPDATES
Saturday's rides will be from Elwood with those who attended camp taking it easy but with some additional hills past Frankston for those who need to give it a nudge. See below for times and locations. . |
