1. WORD FROM THE COACHES

JET SETTERS

Our athletes have been going to even further flung destinations to race and train which is great to see though does make the rest of us at home in Melbourne a little jealous. That is especially true when the skies turn grey and the temperature drops :-(. While Brett is in Brazil, Andy and Andrea in Hawaii, Paul riding mountains in Italy and crew soon to head to Cairns we have been making the final preparations for our upcoming Lorne camp. This will be the kick-start to many an athlete's season with some great training and additional sessions ensuring an action packed long weekend.

See below also for another warm weather escape as bookings are now open for our Thailand camp at Thanyapura in July.

RACING NEWS

Brett Archbold's social media race review is below from his Ironman in Brazil. A very tough and challenging day that can be used to inspire all of us. Well done Brett.

Best wishes to Andy (#141) and Andrea (#566) who this weekend are racing Ironamn Hawaii 70.3. They have both been working hard with the Cairns crew and have now jetted off for a race and some relaxation after.

JUNE PROGRAMS AND GOALS

For those athletes who are on short course or higher memberships your programs for June are now uploaded and available in your athlete login. Do have a look through them to ensure you are aware of what is coming up and ask your coach if you have any question. If your program is not updated or blank then you probably have not given us your goals - please do this through this survey so we can assign you to the correct one.

June's sessions will continue to build on the technique that we have been covering across all sessions but with the addition of some specific strength components. Bike Saturday sessions will head to the hills for some and big gears being worked at wind trainer. Running at the Tan will now also begin to add in some hill work. Do though check with the coach if you are unsure or carrying an injury as the loading will increase and we want to ensure recovery is sufficient.

THURSDAY'S TAN RUN

We will be meeting this week at the base of Anderson Street (the hilly one...) at the Tan ready to run at 6:15pm. Please pass this on and remind your fellow athletes if arriving or meeting together. See you there for an incline or two!

IRONMAN SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS BRAZIL - BRETT ARCHBOLD

I don't really know how to describe yesterday's race here in Brazil....

On one hand, bitterly disappointed and on the other, grateful to have the opportunity to race here and have the good fortune to be able to push on and finish. I had a pb swim of 54min, good T1, and was working legally with 3-4 other riders in a great spot, was on track to come through the first 90k in around 2.20 when bam, back wheel let go.

As you can see in the pic, hub cracked, two spokes blew out and I was going nowhere. Fortunately there was a mechanic just behind me and after 8-10 mins, removed another spoke, and kinda trued the wheel. Kept rolling not feeling safe at all, and 30k later pulled into shimano tent and got a new back wheel. 5-10k later in the pissing rain got a front flat....fixed that and kept going. Came into T2, and thought I'd try and have a solid run and see what happens. Ran ok, not awesome and came across in 9.34.52. Had 3 stops on the bike and lost exactly 16mins Garmin time to race time. Missed a Kona spot by 10mins 30....

I just want to thank everyone who has messaged and offered support recently, absolutely blown away with the support for a bloke just doing a triathlon.
Lastly and most importantly a massive hug, kiss and love to Margaret for all her support before, during and after the race, means the world to me.

Thanyapura-Triathlon-Training-Camp
TRIATHLON TRAINING CAMP THAILAND

Thanyapura Thailand Camp is now the leading camp on our calendar and now is one not to be missed!  Last year we have tailored this camp for the upcoming Ironman World Champs (Kona), 70.3 World Champs and ITU World Championship events or as a springboard to the 2017/18 season.

With the huge success of year one we now have increased the number of athletes to a maximum of 30 athletes catering for all levels

This initiative was born from the need of many athletes who are looking to take their training and racing performance to the next level or for those who need to include a spike in their program, get some real marginal gains and advance themselves as an athlete through true immersion in triathlon training in a world class facility.

Brainstormed and designed by Shotz Sports Director, Darryl Griffiths, author and owner of Shotz Sports Nutrition, and Tri Alliance Level 2 Head Coach and Director, Ollie Allan (Sub 9hr Ironman, 2 x Kona World Champs).

Our aim is to give the attending athletes an incredible experience, jammed packed with insight into and knowledge of significant valuable gains that can contribute to overall performance improvements and success. Thanyapura has been specifically selected as the destination of our premier camp because of its outstanding reputation as a sport, fitness, health and educational haven.

RUN TESTING

Fancy taking part in some run testing and get some data on how you are going? The VIS is after a few athletes to help with testing for the AIS.

The testing is a 2 part running test, the 1st part is a step test where you run at increasing speed every 4 minutes and stop just after you hit your threshold speed, during the test a small blood sample from their ear lobe will be collected as well as heart rate and oxygen consumption (via a mask), the 2nd part is a ramp test to measure their VO2 max and is a maximal test to exhaustion, its only short but it’s a maximal effort so very hard. They will get a report containing their aerobic and anaerobic threshold, running economy at a variety of speeds as well as VO2 max and running speed at VO2 max, this information is very useful to assist in training program design as well as being a good opportunity to benchmark against our athletes. Skinfold measurements can also be taken if you wish but it’s not necessary.

The testing needs to be done twice in about a week with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 8 days apart, they can still train normally during this time, the only thing I’d ask is that they come into both testing sessions in the same condition, i.e don’t do a massive day the day before one test and a recovery day prior to the other one. To start as soon as possible as VIS have a deadline to get the information to the AIS, Testing can start next week and times are fairly flexible. Only 5 spots at this stage, saying that they have further testing coming up in the next couple of months that will need people for if you aren’t able to take part in this round of testing.
