NOOSA/WORLDS TRAINING CAMP
Our Noosa/Worlds training camp last weekend was a great success. The 40+ athletes that attended got in some great training that will really give them an edge in their preparation for the upcoming season.
For our Worlds athletes heading to Auckland in just over 7 weeks they had some very tough sessions especially their run hills set on the Saturday afternoon. However it will be one of those sessions they’ll look back on that will give them some extra confidence on race day.
Over 3 days everyone swam between 4 and 7km, rode 200-350km and ran 20-45km. With some skills work around transitions, open water swimming and a talk from Sally Garrad from Apple to Zucchini Nutrition athletes walked away from the camp with a lot more knowledge about training and racing.
Thanks to our sponsors from Giant, Rocket Science, Shotz and Ascend for their support.

LAST WEEK’S BLOG FROM STEPHEN GAGE
In last week’s Weekly Transitions there was a blog by our new Coach on the Sunshine Coast Stephen Gage. Unfortunately we cut it off too early so here is the whole blog for your reading:
Weighing in on the weight debate
Talking with friends the other week about all things Tri and the topic of weight came up, as it usually does. What’s a good race weight? Does an extra kilo really matter?.
Now we all need to be careful here because it’s an issue of health and people are prone to take this stuff to extremes. The ex-pro Peter Reid springs to mind, I think even he would say his weight obsession was crazy, but I have heard of age groupers who weigh all their meals and count every single calorie. That’s extreme!
Lets look at the individual sports:
In the swim a bit of extra weight actually has its advantages. Some of the world’s best swimmers are heavy. It helps with buoyancy and body position, bit like ballast in a ship. But given in an Ironman we race in wetsuits, this advantage is minimised. Ie the wetsuit performs this task for us.
On the bike, weight can also help when we ride solo in a straight line and over a relatively flat course (like IM racing). Cancellara is a good example of this, the heaviest guy in the TDF peleton is a consistent TT performer. His extra weight (muscle not fat) increases his power. However Spartacus doesn’t ride solo for 180kms and, over an undulating or hilly course, (Port Mac?) it’s almost a case of lighter the better.
However on the run, its just you. 100% weight bearing You. Here’s where the weight matters, and matters big time.
Lets look at the numbers:-
- Your foot strike (cadence) per minute is say 90
- You weigh 1kg more than the next bloke
- You’re an age grouper who wants to run 4hrs
The extra weight PER LEG you need to carry, for the entire run is
21,600 KG’s …
(pretty easy really: 90 strikes over 240 minutes is 21,600 – or over 20 tonnes!)
Go push that in the gym and tell me it won’t affect your run time.
